My academic interest gradually expanded from finance to applied microeconomics. The most important turning point was my independent paper on environmental regulation and the job allocation of college graduates. Using repeated cross-sectional survey data from 2009 to 2019, I examined the impact of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan. The baseline result showed that graduates from key control regions became more likely to enter pollution-related industries after the policy.
This finding was different from the common story of a green escape. I therefore asked a further question: what kinds of compensation or job opportunities might firms provide to attract graduates? I then explored starting salaries, occupational structure, job matching, and geographic mobility.
This experience taught me that an unexpected result can be the beginning of a better research question.
I also participated in a high-school field project on peer effects. My work included matching student background information, questionnaires, exam records, and seating charts, and helping construct peer-performance measures based on classroom distance. The work was detailed and sometimes repetitive, but it gave me a much clearer understanding of how credible empirical research is built from the bottom up. In addition, serving as an academic assistant for the Investment course improved my communication skills and my sense of responsibility.
These experiences led me to a question that I hope to study in the future: how do digital technologies, especially artificial intelligence and digital platforms, change labor demand, job matching, skill formation, and access to public services? I believe this question requires both economic analysis and a serious understanding of governance. The School of Smart Governance brings together applied economics, digital economy, data methods, and real governance scenarios. Q.1. What is the difference between correlation and causality?

Correlation means two variables move together. Causality means a change in one variable produces a change in the other under a credible counterfactual. Causal inference therefore requires a research design, not only a significant coefficient.

Q.2. Why is identification important?

Identification explains where the causal variation comes from and why the estimated effect can be separated from other factors. Without clear identification, a complex model may still describe only correlation.

Q.3. What is a good research question?

A good research question is important, specific, answerable with credible evidence, and connected with existing literature. It should also leave room for an economic mechanism rather than only reporting a pattern.

Q.4. How do you choose a research topic?

I usually begin with a real phenomenon or an unexpected empirical pattern, then read the literature to identify what is known, what remains unclear, and whether suitable data and variation are available.

Q.5. Do you prefer individual or team research?

I value both. Independent work helps me develop ownership and judgment, while teamwork provides complementary skills and stronger criticism. The key is to clarify responsibilities and maintain transparent communication.

Q.6. How do you respond to criticism?

I first separate criticism of the work from judgment of the person. Then I identify whether the problem concerns theory, identification, evidence, or presentation, and revise the most fundamental issue first.

Q.7. What is your view of interdisciplinary research?

Interdisciplinary research is useful when the question genuinely requires different knowledge. It should not become a collection of fashionable terms. A clear research question and division of methods are still essential.

Q.8. What is public value?

Public value includes outcomes that matter to society, such as efficiency, fairness, rights, trust, safety, and inclusion. In smart governance, technical performance is only one part of public value.

Q.9. What is algorithmic bias?

Algorithmic bias occurs when a system produces systematically unfair outcomes because of biased data, labels, objectives, or deployment conditions. Technical correction and institutional oversight are both necessary.

Q.10. What is the digital divide?

The digital divide includes unequal access to devices and networks, unequal digital skills, and unequal ability to benefit from digital systems. It can turn service digitalization into a new source of exclusion.

Q.11. What is your understanding of academic integrity?

Academic integrity means accurate citation, transparent data and methods, honest reporting of results, and respect for the limits of evidence. It also includes taking responsibility for work assisted by A.I tools.

Q.12. What question would you like to ask us?

I would like to know how doctoral students in the School develop interdisciplinary research projects in practice, especially how economic questions are connected with data or real governance scenarios under joint supervision.
