The emerald canopy of Viridian Forest hung thick and heavy, casting long, dappled shadows across the winding dirt path. The air was thick with the scent of pine and the unrelenting, buzzing cacophony of wild bug Pokemon. For ten-year-old Ash Ketchum, walking with Pee-kuh-choo perched comfortably on his shoulder, the forest was a wonderland of opportunity. For Misty, the red-haired girl trailing begrudgingly a few paces behind, it was a waking nightmare.

"I told you, bugs are one of the three most disgusting things in the world!" Misty complained, her eyes darting nervously toward every rustling leaf. "Along with carrots and peppers!"

Ash rolled his eyes, far more focused on the rustling in the bushes ahead. Crawling slowly up the bark of a massive tree was a small, green, segmented caterpillar with large, dark eyes and a bright red antenna. A Caterpie. Ash's heart leaped. He pulled his hat backward, a gesture of absolute focus, and unclipped an empty Poe-kay-ball from his belt.

"Poe-kay-ball, go!" Ash shouted, hurling the sphere.

The ball struck the Caterpie, pulling the bug inside with a flash of red energy. It landed in the grass and began to wobble. One shake. Two shakes. Three shakes.

Click.

Ash stood frozen for a second before his face erupted into a massive, triumphant grin. He sprinted forward, snatching the ball from the grass and striking a dramatic pose. "Yes! I caught a Caterpie!" he cheered, the joy of his very first official catch washing over him.

Misty was profoundly unamused. When Ash let his new Pokemon out to say hello, the small green bug looked up at Misty with wide, affectionate eyes. It crawled toward her, eager to make a new friend.

"Get that bug away from me!" Misty shrieked, backing away in pure terror. "It's gross! Don't let it near me!"

The Caterpie stopped in its tracks. It lowered its head, letting out a sad, whimpering squeak. Ash scooped the heartbroken bug into his arms, glaring at his traveling companion.

"You hurt its feelings, Misty! Caterpie is my Pokemon, and it's my friend." He looked down at the bug. "Don't listen to her, Caterpie. I think you're great."

That night, as the trio camped under the dense forest canopy, Ash slept soundly in his sleeping bag. But outside, illuminated by the pale light of the moon, Pee-kuh-choo and Caterpie sat together on a tree stump. The two Pokemon conversed in their own language, their voices quiet against the crickets.

Caterpie looked up at the sky, its gaze lingering on a Butterfree soaring gracefully across the moon. It mimed flying, expressing its deepest, most fervent dream to the electric mouse. It didn't want to be a small, crawling bug forever. It wanted to fly.

The next morning, the tranquility of the forest was shattered by the sharp cry of a majestic bird soaring overhead. A Pidgeotto, its cream and brown feathers catching the morning light, landed in a nearby clearing.

Ash was brimming with confidence from his success the day before. "All right, another catch!" he declared, hurling a Poe-kay-ball directly at the bird.

The Pidgeotto simply turned its head and swatted the ball away with a powerful gust of its wing, completely unfazed. Ash blinked in surprise. He realized he actually had to battle this one. Without thinking, he grabbed his newest Poe-kay-ball. "Caterpie, go get 'em!"

"Ash, are you crazy?" Misty screamed from the sidelines. "A bird Pokemon will eat a bug Pokemon for breakfast! Pidgeotto has the total advantage!"

Her warning came too late. The massive bird swooped down, its sharp beak and powerful talons striking the small bug relentlessly. Caterpie tried to fight back, but it was battered across the clearing, crying out in pain. Panic seized Ash as he finally understood his foolish mistake. He quickly recalled the bruised Caterpie back into its ball.

"Pee-kuh-choo, it's up to you!" Ash called out.

Pee-kuh-choo leapt into the fray. Dodging a fierce gust of wind from Pidgeotto's wings, the electric mouse built up a fierce charge in its cheeks and unleashed a crackling Thundershock. The electricity arced through the air, striking the flying-type directly. Pidgeotto plummeted to the ground, stunned. Ash threw his Poe-kay-ball, the sphere capturing the bird and clicking shut.

He had caught his second Pokemon, but the victory was bitter. Misty stormed over, berating him. "You don't know anything about Pokemon! You almost got Caterpie killed because you didn't think about type matchups!"

Before Ash could defend himself, a bizarre, sinister laugh echoed through the trees.

"Prepare for trouble!" a woman's voice rang out from the branches above.

"Make it double!" a man replied.

Jumping down from the canopy were two figures clad in stark white uniforms adorned with a massive red 'R'. Jessie and James of Team Rocket, accompanied by a walking, talking Meowth, had tracked the boy down.

"To protect the world from devastation," Jessie recited, striking a pose.

"To unite all peoples within our nation," James continued.

"To denounce the evils of truth and love!"

"To extend our reach to the stars above!"

"Jessie!"

"James!"

"Team Rocket, blast off at the speed of light!"

"Surrender now, or prepare to fight!"

"Meowth, that's right!"

"What do you want?" Ash demanded, gritting his teeth.

"We're here for that Pee-kuh-choo," Jessie sneered. "The one that humiliated us at the Viridian City Pokemon Center. Ekans, go!"

"Koffing, you too!" James yelled.

A massive purple serpent and a floating, toxic orb materialized on the battlefield. Ash immediately ordered Pee-kuh-choo to attack, but before the electric mouse could build a charge, Koffing unleashed a blinding spray of Sludge directly into Pee-kuh-choo's eyes. Pee-kuh-choo shrieked, rubbing its eyes frantically, entirely blinded and out of the fight.

"Pidgeotto, go!" Ash yelled, throwing his newly captured bird into the fray. Pidgeotto fought bravely, whipping up gusts of wind, but the two-on-one assault was too much. Ekans struck with a fierce bite, knocking the bird out of the sky.

Ash was cornered. Pee-kuh-choo was blinded, Pidgeotto was defeated, and Team Rocket was laughing triumphantly. He reached to his belt. He only had one Pokemon left. The one that was already bruised and beaten.

"Caterpie, I know you're hurt, but I need you!" Ash pleaded, tossing the ball.

The small bug materialized, looking tiny and fragile against the towering Ekans and the hovering Koffing. Jessie and James burst into cruel, hysterical laughter.

"What's a puny bug going to do to us?" Jessie mocked.

Ash glared at them, his bond with his new Pokemon solidifying. "Caterpie, use String Shot! Now!"

Caterpie reared back and unleashed a torrent of thick, sticky white silk from its mouth. The silk wrapped tightly around Ekans's jaws, binding the snake entirely. Before James could issue a command, Caterpie spun around and blasted Koffing, wrapping the poison-type in a heavy cocoon of webs that sent it plummeting to the dirt.

"Now, get Meowth!" Ash ordered.

Meowth barely had time to unsheathe his claws before he, too, was entirely mummified in sticky string.

"Finish it with Tackle!" Ash yelled.

With a fierce, determined battle cry, the tiny Caterpie threw its weight forward, slamming into the bundled mass of Team Rocket. The impact sent Jessie, James, Meowth, and their Pokemon tumbling backward, rolling away into the dense brush of the forest in a humiliating retreat.

Ash dropped to his knees, scooping Caterpie up in absolute awe. "You did it, Caterpie! You beat them!"

Suddenly, Caterpie froze. The small bug began to tremble, and a blinding, pulsing white light erupted from its segmented body. Ash shielded his eyes as the light shifted and grew. When the glow finally faded, Caterpie was gone. In its place in Ash's arms was a firm, crescent-shaped, emerald-green chrysalis.

Ash gasped, pulling out his digital Pokédex.

“Metapod. The next stage of Caterpie's evolution. Its shell is as hard as steel.”

"You evolved..." Ash whispered, his eyes shining with pride. He held Metapod up to the sunlight filtering through the trees. "I am the greatest!"

Even Misty, though still keeping her distance from the bug-type, had to admit that the little Pokemon had fought with incredible bravery. Ash returned Metapod to its Poe-kay-ball, feeling the satisfying weight of it in his hand. He had made mistakes today, but he had also witnessed the incredible potential of the creatures he was catching. With Pee-kuh-choo leading the way and his team growing stronger, the boy from Pallet Town adjusted his hat and marched deeper into the shadows of Viridian Forest, ready for whatever awaited him next.
