The shadows of Viridian Forest grew longer as Ash Ketch-um forged ahead, his eyes scanning the dense undergrowth for his next capture. After successfully catching and evolving his very first wild Poe-kay-mon, the boy was practically buzzing with confidence. Pee-kuh-choo rode on his shoulder, keeping a watchful eye on the trees, while Miss-tee trailed behind them, still gripping her suspenders in a constant state of bug-induced paranoia.

Suddenly, a rustling in the bushes caught Ash's attention. A small, brown, segmented worm with a sharp stinger on its head and a large pink nose crawled into the clearing.

Ash pulled out his digital Pokédex. “Wee-dull. The hairy bug Poe-kay-mon. The stinger on this Poe-kay-mon's head injects a strong poison.”

"All right, a Wee-dull! This one is mine!" Ash cheered. He spun his hat backward and plucked a Poe-kay-ball from his belt. But instead of throwing it directly, he remembered the harsh lesson he had learned with his previous catch. He needed to weaken it first. "Pih-jee-oh-toe, go!"

The majestic bird materialized in a burst of white light. Ash commanded a Gust attack, and Pih-jee-oh-toe whipped up a fierce wind that sent the tiny Wee-dull tumbling across the grass. The bug was dazed. It was the perfect opening.

Ash wound up his pitch, ready to hurl his Poe-kay-ball. "Go, Poe-kay-ball!"

But just as the sphere left his fingertips, a glint of polished steel flashed in the sunlight. A long, razor-sharp katana sliced through the air, intercepting the Poe-kay-ball and knocking it harmlessly into the bushes.

Ash gasped, stumbling backward. Standing before him was a boy about his own age, dressed head-to-toe in traditional, heavy blue armor, wielding a wooden sword and glaring from beneath a horned helmet.

"Are you Ash, from the town of Pallet?" the armored boy demanded, pointing the tip of his wooden blade directly at Ash's chest.

"Yeah, that's me. Who are you?" Ash shot back, irritated.

"I am the Sam-er-eye! And I challenge you to a Poe-kay-mon battle!"

Ash gritted his teeth. Because of this sudden, theatrical interruption, the Wee-dull had completely vanished into the thick underbrush. His catch was gone. "You ruined my chance to catch that Wee-dull! Fine, you want a battle? You got one!"

The Sam-er-eye did not hesitate. He tossed his own Poe-kay-ball, releasing a terrifying, bipedal stag beetle with massive, spiked pincers atop its head. "Pin-seer, go!"

Miss-tee shrieked at the sight of the giant, menacing bug, hiding behind a tree.

Ash confidently pointed forward. "Pih-jee-oh-toe, use Sand Attack!"

The bird kicked up a blinding cloud of dirt, but the Sam-er-eye merely scoffed. Pin-seer charged straight through the dust, leaped into the air, and clamped its massive, crushing pincers directly onto Pih-jee-oh-toe's body. The flying-type cried out in agony and plummeted to the ground, completely knocked out in a single, brutal strike.

Ash panicked. He recalled his defeated bird. He only had one option left. "Met-uh-pod, I choose you!"

The green chrysalis appeared on the dirt path, completely motionless. Miss-tee screamed from behind her tree. "Ash, are you crazy?! Met-uh-pod can't fight a giant Pin-seer!"

The Sam-er-eye laughed. "A foolish choice! Pin-seer, crush it!"

The giant beetle lunged, its spikes aimed directly at the unmoving cocoon.

"Met-uh-pod, Harden!" Ash screamed.

The chrysalis glowed with a sudden, metallic sheen. Pin-seer's massive pincers snapped shut around Met-uh-pod, but instead of crushing the shell, a loud clang echoed through the forest. Pin-seer's eyes bulged in pain. The spikes on its pincers cracked against the diamond-hard surface of the cocoon. The massive bug released Met-uh-pod and retreated, whimpering in pain.

Frustrated, the Sam-er-eye recalled his injured fighter. "You have a strong defense. But let us see how it fares against this! Met-uh-pod, go!"

The Sam-er-eye tossed a Poe-kay-ball, and a second, identical green chrysalis materialized on the battlefield.

Ash narrowed his eyes. "Met-uh-pod, Harden!"

The Sam-er-eye crossed his arms. "Met-uh-pod, you use Harden too!"

What followed was the most agonizingly slow battle in the history of Poe-kay-mon trainers. Hours passed. The hot afternoon sun beat down on the clearing. The two green cocoons sat entirely motionless in the dirt, doing absolutely nothing but making their shells harder and harder. Off to the side, Miss-tee and Pee-kuh-choo had completely given up on watching; they were lying on beach towels, wearing sunglasses and sunbathing out of sheer, mind-numbing boredom.

The tense silence was finally broken by a low, ominous humming noise.

The humming grew into a vibrating, terrifying roar. Bursting from the trees was a massive, furious swarm of yellow-and-black wasps, each armed with twin drill-like stingers on their arms.

"Bee-drill!" the Sam-er-eye yelled, his bravado entirely vanishing. "Run!"

The swarm descended like a wrathful plague. Ash scrambled to recall his Poe-kay-mon, but in his blind panic as the massive stingers slashed at the air around his face, he dropped the Poe-kay-ball. One of the Bee-drill swooped down, wrapping its insectoid legs around Ash's Met-uh-pod, and carried the helpless chrysalis away into the sky.

"Met-uh-pod! No!" Ash screamed, reaching out desperately as the swarm vanished into the dense canopy.

There was no time to chase them. The remaining Bee-drill chased Ash, Miss-tee, and the Sam-er-eye all the way back to the armored boy's secluded wooden cabin. They slammed the heavy wooden door shut just as the stingers buried themselves into the exterior wood.

Inside the dark, quiet cabin, the Sam-er-eye turned on Ash with furious eyes.

"You are a disgrace!" the Sam-er-eye shouted, his voice trembling with anger. "A true Poe-kay-mon trainer would never leave his friend behind! You abandoned your Met-uh-pod!"

Ash looked down at his trembling hands, the crushing weight of his failure settling into his chest. He didn't argue. He didn't defend himself.

The Sam-er-eye was right. He had been a coward, and now his Poe-kay-mon was paying the price.

That night, while Miss-tee and the Sam-er-eye slept peacefully on the floorboards, Ash quietly laced up his shoes. With Pee-kuh-choo at his side, he slipped out of the cabin into the cool, moonlit forest, determined to make things right.

Following the trail of broken branches, Ash finally discovered the hive at the base of a colossal oak tree. Dozens of yellow, shell-like Kuh-koo-nuh hung from the branches, completely dormant. Nestled among them was his own green Met-uh-pod.

Ash crept forward, his heart pounding in his throat. He reached out, his fingertips brushing the hard shell of his friend. "Met-uh-pod... I'm so sorry. I'm here to take you home."

But as Ash gently lifted the chrysalis, a horrifying sound echoed through the grove. The hanging Kuh-koo-nuh began to crack. Brilliant white light spilled from their shells. They weren't sleeping. They were evolving.

Within seconds, an entire new army of furious Bee-drill burst from their shells, their red eyes locking onto the boy tress-passing in their hive. The buzzing was deafening.

"Run!" Ash yelled, cradling Met-uh-pod tightly to his chest as he sprinted through the dark forest. Pee-kuh-choo rode on his shoulder, firing desperate electrical sparks to slow the swarm, but there were simply too many.

Ash tripped over an exposed root, tumbling hard into the dirt. The Met-uh-pod rolled out of his arms. The swarm of Bee-drill descended in a terrifying spiral, their stingers poised to strike the helpless cocoon.

Ash didn't hesitate. He threw his own body over Met-uh-pod, shielding the Poe-kay-mon with his back, squeezing his eyes shut and waiting for the agonizing sting of the drills.

"I won't leave you again!" Ash screamed. "I promise!"

The stingers never struck.

Beneath Ash's chest, Met-uh-pod began to vibrate. A blinding, pulsing, pure white light erupted from the green shell, so intensely bright that the Bee-drill were forced to halt their attack and shield their eyes. Ash scrambled backward as the shell cracked down the middle.

Rising from the fractured chrysalis was a stunning, magnificent creature with large, purple, majestic wings laced with black veins. It fluttered into the air, its large red eyes looking down at Ash with profound loyalty and love.

Ash pulled out his Pokédex, his hands shaking in awe. “But-er-free. The Butterfly Poe-kay-mon. In battle, it flaps its wings at high speeds to release highly toxic dust into the air.”

"But-er-free..." Ash breethd. He looked up at the swarming wasps. "Okay, But-er-free! Use Sleep Powder!"

The beautiful butterfly ascended gracefully above the furious swarm. It flapped its wide, purple wings, releasing a shimmering, glittering cascade of azure dust that rained down upon the grove. The moment the dust touched the Bee-drill, their aggressive buzzing slowed. One by one, the massive wasps closed their eyes, dropping heavily to the forest floor, completely fast asleep.

The forest was silent once more. Ash held out his arm, and But-er-free landed gently on his wrist, rubbing its head affectionately against his cheek.

The next morning, the Sam-er-eye stood at the edge of the forest path, having witnessed the incredible evolution and Ash's selfless bravery. The boy in armor bowed deeply, a gesture of profound, newfound respect.

"You proved yourself to be a true trainer, Ash of Pallet Town," the Sam-er-eye admitted humbly. "I misjudged you. Follow this path, and it will lead you straight to Pew-ter Sit-ee. May your journey be victorious."

Ash smiled, returning the bow before adjusting his hat. With Pee-kuh-choo on his shoulder, Miss-tee by his side, and a beautiful But-er-free flying overhead, the young trainer marched forward, leaving the Viridian Forest behind and stepping into the bright, unforgiving light of his next great challenge.
