Soul Craft - the Hollow's Trial
Chapter 2 – the Endless Office
The exit from Level 1 was a staircase descending into darkness.
Ren descended slowly, her Make-Shift Shield raised, her senses alert. The stairs seemed to go on forever, winding down through layers of mist that grew thicker with each step. The air grew colder, the silence deeper.
At the bottom, a door waited. It was made of frosted glass, with a brass handle and a sign that read:
Welcome to the Endless Office.
Please Keep Your Despair to A Minimum.
Failure to Comply Will Result in an Audit.
Ren pushed the door open.
The office stretched before her—infinite corridors of beige cubicles, fluorescent lights, and the faint, lingering smell of stale coffee and printer toner. Thousands of figures sat at identical desks, their fingers clicking against keyboards with mechanical precision.
They were humanoid, but wrong. Their skin was the color of old paper. Their eyes were empty sockets. They typed endlessly, filling out forms that seemed to multiply the moment they finished.
The blue window appeared.
[Level 2: the Endless Office]
Objective: Complete Your T.P.S Report.
Warning: the Auditor is Watching. Errors Will be Penalized.
Ren looked at the figure sitting at the nearest desk. It didn't acknowledge her. It just kept typing, its fingers moving with mechanical precision.
On the desk, a single sheet of paper:
T.P.S Report
Employee Name: ________________ _
Department: ________________ _
Reason for Being Here: ________________ _
Projected Completion Time: ________________ _
Failure to Comply Will Result in Deletion.
Ren grabbed the paper and a pen. She filled out the fields quickly:
Employee Name: Ren
Department: Tactician
Reason for Being Here: To survive
Projected Completion Time: As soon as possible
She scanned the room. The Desk Jockeys were still typing, their heads swiveling occasionally to scan the room. She walked past them, her footsteps silent on the carpet.
Halfway across the floor, the lights flickered. The typing stopped. The Desk Jockeys turned in perfect unison, their empty sockets fixed on her.
And then the Auditor appeared.
It was tall—nine feet, at least—and thin, like a skeleton wrapped in a business suit. Its face was featureless, a smooth, pale expanse of skin where features should have been. Its hands were long and spidery, each finger tipped with a sharpened nail.
It held a clipboard.
"Ren," the Auditor said, its voice a chorus of whispers. "Your T.P.S Report Has Been Submitted. but There is an Error."
Ren's blood turned to ice. "Error?"
"You Failed to Include Your Middle Initial. the Form Requires A Middle Initial. This is A Discrepancy."
Her mind raced. She had no middle initial. She'd never had one.
But she remembered the pattern. She remembered the weakness.
"Ren," she said, her voice steady. "My middle initial is R."
The Auditor paused, its faceless head tilting slightly.
"R for..."
"R for Resilience," Ren said. "That's what I am. That's what I've always been."
The Auditor was silent for a long moment.
"Discrepancy Resolved. Submit Corrected Form. the Auditor Will be Watching."
It turned and walked back into the darkness.
Ren exhaled slowly, her heart pounding. She had lied to the Auditor. She had created a middle initial out of nothing.
And it had worked.
She walked to the Drop Box at the end of the floor and slid her form into the slot. The box swallowed it with a mechanical gulp.
