Soul Craft - the Hollow's Trial
Chapter 1 – the Gray Suburbs
Ren woke to the sound of silence.
It was the kind of silence that pressed against her ears like water pressure, the kind that made her feel like the world had stopped breathing. She opened her eyes to a sky the color of wet concrete—no sun, no clouds, no birds, no wind. Just an endless, oppressive gray that stretched to the horizon.
She was lying on a lawn. A perfect, green lawn, immaculately manicured, with not a single weed or dead patch. In front of her stood a house—white, two stories, with dark shutters and a front porch that looked like it had never been used. Behind her, another identical house.
To her left, another. To her right, another.
An entire neighborhood of identical houses, all of them empty, all of them waiting.
"I died," Ren said aloud.
The words hung in the air, strange and hollow. She remembered the accident—the screech of tires, the flash of headlights, the impact that had thrown her through the windshield. She remembered the pain, brief and white-hot, and then nothing.
And now this.
She sat up slowly, her body aching with a dull, distant pain. She was wearing the same clothes she'd died in—jeans, a t-shirt, a worn leather jacket. No blood. No wounds. Just a faint, lingering soreness that seemed to come from somewhere deep inside her.
A blue window flickered in her peripheral vision, hovering in the air like a hologram.

Ren stared at the window, her heart racing. "What the hell is this?"
The window didn't respond. It simply hovered there, its text glowing faintly in the gray light.
She stood, brushing grass from her jeans. The neighborhood stretched in every direction—endless streets, identical houses, empty driveways. No cars. No people. No sound.
A second window appeared.
Level 1: the Gray Suburbs
Objective: Find the Exit.
Warning: Solo Run not Recommended. Seek Allies.
"Solo run," Ren muttered. "Seek allies. In an empty suburb. Great."
She started walking.
The houses blurred past her, identical and lifeless. She passed a driveway with a minivan that looked like it had never been driven. A child's tricycle sat on a sidewalk, its bright red plastic faded to a dull pink. A mailbox overflowed with letters that had never been opened.
Ren felt a chill crawl up her spine. This place was wrong. Everything about it was wrong.
She reached the end of the street and turned a corner, expecting to find another row of houses. Instead, she found a dead end—a cul-de-sac with a single house that was slightly different from the others. Its shutters were broken, its lawn overgrown with weeds. The front door hung open, swinging slightly in a breeze that Ren couldn't feel.
She approached cautiously, her footsteps silent on the cracked pavement. Inside, the house was dark and empty, its furniture covered in white sheets.
And then she heard it.
A sound like wet paper tearing. A sound like something dragging itself across the floor.
Ren spun around.
A figure stood in the doorway, silhouetted against the gray light. It was tall and shapeless, like a mannequin made of melting wax. It had no face, no features—just a smooth, oval head that turned slowly toward her.
Another blue window flashed.
Dullthing Spawned
Type: Minor Horror
Weakness: Crushing Damage
Emotional Attack: Despair Aura (Feeble)
"This creature feeds on emptiness. Do not let it touch you."
Ren's heart hammered in her chest. "Tactician," she whispered, her mind racing. "See the pattern. See the weakness."
She scanned the room. The Dullthing was slow, its movements jerky and uncoordinated. Its legs were thin, unsteady, barely able to support its weight. Its weakness was obvious: it couldn't balance.
Ren grabbed a broken chair leg from the floor and lunged.
She didn't aim for the Dullthing's body. She aimed for its knee.
The wood connected with a wet crunch, and the creature toppled, its leg buckling beneath it. It let out a wail—a high, keening sound that seemed to come from everywhere at once—and collapsed into a puddle of gray sludge.
Ren stood over it, breathing hard. The blue window appeared again.
Combat Complete
Dullthing Defeated
[Salvage Acquired:]
Plastic Flesh x2 (Brittle, wax-like material. Can be shaped when heated.)
Dullthing Core x1 (Dense emotional residue. Contains trace despair.)
[Recipe Discovered: Make-shift Shield]
"A shield forged from the hollow remnants of your first enemy. It will protect you from despair."
Requires: Plastic Flesh x2 | Dullthing Core x1
Ren knelt beside the puddle, her hands trembling. She didn't know how she knew, but she understood the crafting instinctively. She gathered the materials, pressing them together, shaping them with her hands.
The shield formed in her palms—a small, round buckler made of gray, wax-like material. It was warm to the touch, and when she held it up, she felt a faint resistance to the emptiness that pressed against her soul.
Make-shift Shield Equipped
Effect: +10% Resistance to Despair.
Ren looked at the shield, then at the door leading back to the street.
She had survived. She had crafted her first item. She had taken the first step.
But she knew, with a certainty that settled deep in her bones, that this was only the beginning.
