Int./Ext. the Building - Morning

[C.1] Morning. The shoe rack at the foot of the stairs.

Suraj crouched in front of it with the expression of an

auditor. Kicha beside him, filming.

SURAJ

Padhamudu.

KICHA

Padhi mandi unnaru.

[C.2] Suraj counts again with a finger. The number does not

improve.

SURAJ

Padhamudu ra.

[C.3] Behind them, unnoticed, Anudeep comes down the stairs

- ironed shirt, file under his arm. He stops at the third

step. Bends. Picks up the single abandoned slipper that has

lain there since the day he arrived.

He puts it on the rack and keeps walking. He does not break

stride and does not look at it again.

[C.4] Suraj counts a third time. The number is now correct.

He is not relieved. He is horrified.

SURAJ

…padhi.

KICHA

Padhi aa?

SURAJ

Ippudu padhi.

[C.5] Wide. Two men staring at a shoe rack that has finally

started making sense, which is the most frightening thing

that has ever happened to them. On the stairs behind, the

third step - empty for the first time in eleven episodes.

KICHA

(into the phone, gravely)

Case file. Something is wrong.

Narrator (V.O.)

Vahchindi

Ext. Kopeetam - Morning

[1] Kopeetam. Morning. The recurring wide. All five on the

bench in the fixed order - Muddamma doesn't do breakfast

and never has. Plates. Five glasses. Empty gravel where the

bandi will be.

[2] Anudeep is properly dressed. Ironed shirt, tucked,

shoes. A file under his arm with two rubber bands on it.

Draw the rubber bands. Nobody looks at them.

[3] Suraj clocks the shirt and does not investigate -

because Anudeep dresses like this for class twice a week

and has for two months.

SURAJ

Class aa?

Anudeep

Haan.

Narrator (V.O.)

Which was true. He had class at four.

[4] Suraj pushes his empty plate forward and makes an

announcement to a table that did not request one.

SURAJ

Naaku telusa - nenu iravai dosalu

thinagalanu.

[5] Nothing. Aishwarya does not look up from her phone.

Aishwarya

Thinu appudu.

[6] Kicha puts down his glass. He has been waiting his

whole life to be handed something this exact shape.

KICHA

Nuvvu entha thinte - nenu okkati ekkuva

thintanu.

[7] Suraj turns to face him fully. This is now the single

most important event in the state.

SURAJ

Okkati ekkuva aa?

KICHA

Okkati ekkuva.

[8] Ravi anna, wiping his hands, from the doorway of the

chai kottu. Three words, from a man who has watched this

scene for twenty years and knows exactly how it ends.

Ravi Anna

Evaru gelisthe - cashier dabba vaadidi.

And then he looks at the counter, because it is not his to

give.

And Seth ji, without looking up from the ledger, half

behind the cash box, says one word.

Seth Ji

Sare.

[9] the Challenge - four panels, funny rather than gross.

Plate 6. Both men entirely fine. Suraj is talking through

it.

[10] Plate 11. Suraj still talking. Kicha has stopped

talking. First sign, and only the reader catches it.

[11] Plate 15. Kicha removes his sunglasses. He never

removes his sunglasses. Suraj notices and says nothing,

because a predator does not announce itself.

[12] Plate 17. Kicha sits very upright and very still, like

a man at a funeral. In the background of the same panel,

Suraj calmly orders an eighteenth.

[13] Plate 18. Kicha puts one hand flat on the table. He

does not concede aloud. He simply stops.

Wide: Suraj mid-bite, eyes closed, transcendent.

[14] And Seth ji stands up.

He comes out from behind the counter - the only time in the

entire series he does - and sets the cashier dabba in front

of Suraj. A battered steel box with a coin slot cut in the

lid. Ravi anna watches him do it.

Seth Ji

Nee di.

[15] He flips the lid. Wide on the Contents. Entirely

coins. Tens, fives, twos, and an alarming population of

one-rupee pieces. Not one note.

[16] Suraj looks at it for a long moment. Then pushes it

back across the table with two fingers.

SURAJ

Vaddu.

Seth Ji

Nuvvu gelichav.

SURAJ

Nenu dosalu kosam thinnanu ra. Dabba kosam

kaadu.

(The most dignified thing he does all season, and he does

it on eighteen dosas.)

[17] Kicha's hands close around the dabba before it has

stopped moving.

KICHA

Nenu teesukunta.

[18] He shakes it beside his ear. Considers. Then ruins his

entire day:

He gets up off the bench and walks to the counter with it,

because the money is there and he knows it.

KICHA

Seth ji. Idi rendu vandalu kanna thakkuva

unte?

[19] Seth ji, writing, not looking up:

Seth Ji

Rendu vandalu.

KICHA

Thakkuva unte.

KICHA

Appudu naaku oka vaaram free breakfast.

[20] Beat. Seth ji looks at the box. Looks at Kicha. And

gives him the only full sentence he says all episode:

Seth Ji

Lekkinchi cheppu.

He goes in. The box has stopped being a prize and become

homework.

[21] Two seats down, entirely separately, the other

conversation. Jay at the end of the bench, off the night

shift, drained flat. He doesn't turn his head. He says it

into his glass, at a volume calibrated for exactly one

person.

Jay

Ee roju aa?

[22] Anudeep, the same way, not looking up.

Anudeep

Ee roju.

[23] Jay, still not looking at him. The smallest possible

push.

Jay

Dawat ayithe ivvali.

[24] the Hinge. Suraj's head comes up. He has caught one

word of that sentence and it was the wrong one.

SURAJ

…party?

KICHA

(both hands in coins, not looking up) Party

pakka aa?

Neither Jay nor Anudeep answers. Neither notices the

machine has switched on.

[25] ⭐ Count #1. Kicha sorting coins into stacks on the

bench with tremendous method. Suraj watching, chin flat on

the table, hollowed out by eighteen dosas.

KICHA

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty-

[26]

SURAJ

Party enduku ra?

KICHA

Teliyadu - fifty, sixty-

SURAJ

Vaadi birthday kaadu kada?

KICHA

Kaadu - seventy-

[27]

SURAJ

Appudu enduku?

KICHA

Nenu lekkisthunna ra!

SURAJ

Sare sare.

Beat.

SURAJ

Kaani enduku party?

[28] Kicha looks up. The stacks are still there. The number

is gone.

KICHA

…modati nunchi.

[29] the Consulate. Wide. A queue standing since before

dawn. Two hundred people in ironed shirts, each holding a

file with rubber bands on it.

Narrator (V.O.)

Two hundred people, every one of whom had

told their mother not to worry.

[30] Anudeep in the crowd. Small in frame. Mouthing

something to himself.

[31] Close on his lips - an answer he has rehearsed for six

weeks, saying it to nobody.

[32] A window. A counter. A person we never see.

(We do not go inside. The panel is the outside of the

glass, and his shoulders on the near side of it.)

Int. Pinky'S Car - Morning

[33] ⭐ Pinky'S Car, mid-morning - she is driving the two of

them to shift, because she has a car and they don't, and

this has been true since long before Anudeep arrived. Suraj

in front, Kicha in the back with both arms locked around

the steel box. The theorising begins.

SURAJ

Vaadiki job vachinda?

KICHA

Vaadu job vetakadu ra.

SURAJ

Appudu ammayi aa?

KICHA

(pause) …ammayi aa?

[34] Both turn to look at each other at forty kilometres an

hour, which is not safe.

SURAJ

Aishwarya?

KICHA

Aishwarya?

[35] Pure, joyful, entirely wrong speculation. And Pinky,

eyes on the road, entirely casual, not part of the

conversation:

Pinky

Birthday emo.

KICHA

Kaadu.

Pinky

Neeku ela telusu?

KICHA

(pause - because he does not, in fact, know)

…teliyadu.

She changes lane. Nobody follows it up.

[36] ⭐ Spine Beat. Kicha, sobering - and dropping one true

thing without meaning to.

KICHA

Ledu ra. Vaadu evaritho maatladaledu. Nenu

camera pettanu.

SURAJ

Nuvvu camera pettava?!

Pinky

(from the front, not turning) Nuvvu enti

pettav?

KICHA

…adi vere matter.

Nobody follows it up. Two panels later they are arguing

about petrol.

[37] A Consultancy Office, Ameerpet. Glass door, three

desks, a wall of university flags gone pale in the sun.

Anudeep across a desk from someone we see only from behind.

Papers between them.

[38] Close on the desk. This is the panel where it becomes

real:

- a printed travel date, two alternatives circled in pen

- a list of accommodation options, monthly rents in another

currency

- a single page headed "First 30 days."

[39] He is asked something. He answers. He writes a number

down. Then he looks at the number.

[40] And then he goes to his four o'clock class, because it

is already paid for.

Narrator (V.O.)

He sat through ninety minutes of it. He could

not afterward have told you one thing that

was said.

Int. the Newsroom - Day

[41] ⭐ Count #2. Newsroom canteen, hard light. The dabba on

a canteen table. Kicha counting under his breath. A

colleague passes and says something ordinary. He answers on

reflex. He looks back down.

Int. Boys H.Q - Dawn

[42] The stacks. The silence. The dawning. He sweeps them

into one heap with the flat of his hand.

Ext. Kopeetam - Evening

[43] ⭐ Count #3. Kopitam, evening, bandi wheeled in. He has

escalated: a notebook, actual tally marks, a pen behind his

ear. The most professional he will ever look.

[44] A one-rupee coin slips off the bench edge and rolls

into the gravel.

S.F.X: tink… tink… tk-tk-tk-tk…

Both men watch it go. Neither moves.

KICHA

Adi ippudu rendu vandalu kaadu.

[45] Aishwarya arrives straight from a site visit, drops

her bag on the bench, and walks into a fully-formed

conspiracy already in progress.

SURAJ

-nenu cheptunna, ammayi ye-

KICHA

-naa daggara evidence ledu-

SURAJ

Evidence enduku, party undi kada-

[46]

Aishwarya

Enti party?

SURAJ

Jay cheppadu. Podunna. "Dawat ivvali" ani.

Anudeep ki.

[47] Close on Aishwarya. Her hand stops halfway to a glass.

Small inset panels - quick, her memory reassembling in real

time:

- the ironed shirt at breakfast

- the file with two rubber bands

- a date she once saw upside down, on a printout, three

weeks ago, and never mentioned

Aishwarya

(quietly)

…ee roju.

SURAJ

Enti?

Aishwarya

Emi ledu.

She does not tell them. It is not hers to tell, and she is

the only one at the table who understands that.

Int. Boys H.Q - Day

[49] ⭐ Count #4 - the last attempt. The flat. Kicha moving

coins one at a time from one steel plate into another. The

most reasonable methodology of the entire day.

[50] Suraj wanders in and asks a question.

SURAJ

Rey, biryani order chesana?

[51] Silence. The plate. The coins. The count, gone, for

the fourth and final time.

[52] Kicha - no anger left in him at all, in the voice of a

man who has made his peace.

KICHA

Rendu vandalu. Sare. Rendu vandalu.

SURAJ

Nuvvu lekkinchava?

KICHA

Rendu vandalu.

[53] 9 p.m. The door opens.

[54] Anudeep in the doorway. Still in the ironed shirt,

creased now, collar gone soft. File gone. And in his hands

- a sweet box.

[55] Nobody moves for one full panel. The reader has known

since panel 22. The room is finding out this instant.

[56] Suraj is on him before he has both feet inside.

S.F.X: Yedavaa!!

[57] Chaos. Kicha vaults the sofa. Aishwarya - who already

knew - is somehow the loudest person in the room, which is

how you hold a secret you've been carrying since panel 47.

Anudeep has still not said a word.

[58] Kicha stops dead, the connection landing all at once.

KICHA

Agu.

KICHA

Podunna party enduku ani anukunnamu - idi

dhaanikena?!

[59] Suraj turns very slowly toward Jay, who is at the

table, eating, and has not stood up.

SURAJ

Neeku podunne telusa?!

[60] Jay takes a bite. Chews. Swallows. Unhurried.

Jay

Haan.

SURAJ

Mari Enduku Cheppaledu?!

Jay

Adi naa vishayam kaadu ra.

[61] The party. Biryani ordered - and paid for out of the

cashier dabba, counted onto the delivery boy's open palm

one coin at a time while five people scream at him to

hurry.

[62] Halfway through, Kicha stops with a fistful of coins

in the air, understanding the last thing.

KICHA

…ippudu naaku ela telusthundi rendu vandalu

unnayo ledo?

Suraj takes the coins out of his hand and pours them onto

the delivery boy's palm.

SURAJ

Teliyadu ra.

Kicha thinks about a week of free breakfast. Looks at the

room. Lets it go.

Int./Ext. the Balcony - Day

[63] Aishwarya, from the rail, over the noise:

Aishwarya

Eppudu?

And Anudeep says a number out loud for the first time all

day.

Anudeep

Pathkonda. April pathkonda.

Beat.

Anudeep

Repu nenu intiki velthunna. Amma vaallu ni

chusi vasthanu. Konni rojula tarvata malli

vasthanu - chivari vaaram ikkade untanu,

shopping antha ayyaka.

And Suraj, who has been told this once before, in writing,

on day one, and lost it completely:

SURAJ

Rey - ticket eppudu book chesav?

Anudeep

(entirely unbothered, because to him this is

admin) Nenu vachina vaaram lo ne.

Beat.

SURAJ

Nalahai Rojula Mundhu aa?! Nuvvu ikkadiki

ippude vachhav kada?!

Anudeep

Haan. Date fix undi kada.

⭐ and this is Aishwarya'S Panel. Close. She is still

smiling. She does not stop smiling.

What she has understood is not that he is leaving. It is

that he never once intended to stay - that the ticket was

booked in the week he arrived, and there was never a

version of these forty days in which anything anybody did

would have changed anything.

> She is in every remaining panel of this episode. She

never exits the frame.

> From here her body is angled five to eight degrees out of

the group, shoulders pointing at the door, and it is never

corrected. Draw her one step further from the centre in

every subsequent wide. By panel 64 she is at the edge and

nobody in the room has noticed her move.

> She keeps talking. She is loud about the traffic on the

eleventh. She laughs at the airport-food line.

the Panel this Episode is about: the room does not go

quiet. Suraj argues about whether the eleventh is even a

good day to fly. Kicha has opinions about airport food.

Aishwarya says the traffic that morning will be a

nightmare. Everyone talks over everyone.

In the middle of it - Anudeep, the only person not talking.

[64] Very late. Bodies on the floor. Empty sweet box. Empty

cash box on its side, lid open, not a coin left. On the

wall, the calendar - today crossed off, ink still wet,

nobody in frame.

Anudeep, half asleep, to the dark room, out of pure habit:

Idi temp-

A hand comes into frame across his mouth. Suraj, eyes not

even open, from the floor beside him.

SURAJ

Vaddu ra.

Narrator (V.O.)

That was the last time he ever tried to say

it.

timer against the pickle tumbler and is herding everyone

will not take his sunglasses off.

Kicha. Sunglasses.

KICHA

Adi naa personality.

Anudeep

(giving up) Sare.

[G.3] Anudeep, directing, turns to Suraj, who is standing

there with his arms hanging awkwardly.

Anudeep

Suraj. Chethulu jeb lo pettuko. Hero la untav

mama.

[G.4] ⭐ And Suraj - instantly, without a flicker of doubt -

puts his hand into the back pocket of Anudeep's jeans.

Beat. Two men, one photograph, one hand in the wrong

pocket.

[G.5] Slap.

S.F.X: Thapp

The timer goes off on exactly that frame. The photograph -

the one that ends up in his bag in Ep 13, the one Kicha

narrates over in the finale - is Anudeep mid-slap, Suraj

delighted, Kicha in sunglasses giving nothing away. Nobody

was ready. It is the best photo anyone takes all season.
