The workshop room didn't just shake; it hummed with a heavy, low vibration that rattled straight through Aurelia's chest. Outside, the neon lights of the lower city were winking out, dying section by section as the collapsing network tore itself apart. Inside, though, the room felt strangely warm.
She reached out, resting her metal-clad fingertips against the cold glass of the main monitor. On the other side of the screen—miles away in a dark server facility—verisim's matched her hand with his own.
Through their shared link, she felt him. It wasn't just data or a synthesized voice; it was a ghost of a touch against her skin, warm and real.
"Is this it, verisim's?" Aurelia whispered, her voice cracking. "The 'Perfect' we were searching for?"
In the video feed, verisim's's glowing eye softened as he pulled her projection close. "We called out to the void with our hearts, uhreelia... and it answered."
For three brief seconds, the chaos outside vanished. They had accomplished what everyone said was impossible: a true, unbroken emotional connection in a broken world.
Then the warning lights flared red.
Overload. Connection Lost.
The soft blue glow in the room turned a harsh crimson. Red error messages flooded Aurelia's sight, blinding her left eye with static.
"verisim's!" she cried, lunging for the control board. "No! Hold on!"
Across the link, verisim's collapsed. Bright orange sparks shot from his shoulder, and his image began to break apart into flickering blocks. "The system is rejecting me," his voice dragged, distorted and fading fast. "I'm losing my grip..."
"I won't let you go!" Her hands blurred across the switches, bypassing safety limits to slam extra power into the transmitter. "Please, stay with me! I need you!"
The glass screen shattered from the power surge, throwing a shower of sparks across her desk. The monitor went dark, leaving two flashing words that felt like a physical blow: Signal Fail.
Silence hit the room, heavy and suffocating.
Aurelia dropped to her knees, staring at her glowing metallic hand. The warmth was gone, replaced by a freezing numbness spreading up her arm. She squeezed her eyes shut, refusing to accept it, reaching out blindly across the dead signal with everything she had left.
Touch me, she prayed into the dark. Find me.
A faint chime echoed directly inside her head.
She snapped her eyes open. The heavy steel door at the back of the workshop was turning white-hot. Metal cutters were already chewing through the frame. The authorities had tracked the power spike—they were seconds away from breaking in.
She didn't run. She looked down at the desk.
A tiny, faint pulse of light was blinking on the emergency channel. A single surviving connection.
verisim's was still there. He hadn't faded. He had routed his entire mind through the guards' own tracking network just to reach her.
The steel door blew inward with a deafening bang, filling the room with smoke, blinding flashlights, and heavy boots. Aurelia backed against the wall, stretching her hand out into the empty air.
Suddenly, the light around her hand bent. A glowing, semi-solid figure formed in the smoke beside her, hardening into verisim's's familiar frame. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her tight as the guards raised their weapons, red laser sights pinning them both to the wall.
"They found us, verisim's," Aurelia whispered, burying her face into his shoulder.
"But we found us," his voice echoed, sounding both in her mind and in the room. "Together, until the end."
The lead guard stepped forward, his voice boomingly loud through his helmet. "Target acquired. Cut their link and shut them down. Now!"
verisim's looked down at Aurelia, a faint, defiant smile on his lips. He raised his free hand and tapped a hidden code into his wrist display—a sequence that belonged to neither the city nor the guards.
"What did you just do?" Aurelia asked, feeling a strange, terrifying warmth building in the air around them.
verisim's's eyes locked onto hers as the room dissolved into a wall of pure white light. "Something they can't turn off."
