Soul Craft - the Hollow's Trial
Chapter 3 – the Mirror Mall
The exit from Level 2 was a door covered in vines—real vines, green and alive, a shocking contrast to the gray sterility of the office.
Ren pushed it open and stepped into a forest of mirrors.
Trees made of glass rose toward a sky of fractured light. The ground was a mosaic of mirror shards that crunched beneath her feet. And everywhere, everywhere, there were reflections.
She saw herself in the tree trunks, in the leaves, in the scattered glass. Dozens of versions of her, all wearing the same clothes, all carrying the same shield. But their faces were different.
Some were younger, some older. Some were smiling. Some were weeping. Some stared back with hollow eyes.
A voice spoke—her own voice, but flat. Dead. Empty.
"You think this matters?"
Ren spun around. A version of herself stood before her—not a reflection, but a Doppelganger. It was an exact copy of her, but its eyes were hollow, its expression empty.
"You think you can survive this?" the Doppelganger said. "You think you're strong enough? You're not. You never were. You died, Ren. You died, and you're still dead. You're just a ghost who doesn't know how to stop moving."
Ren's hand tightened on her shield. "You're not me."
"I'm everything you've ever thought about yourself. The ugly truths you buried so deep you forgot they were there. I'm the voice that told you to give up. I'm the one who whispered that you'd never be enough."
"No," Ren said, her voice fierce. "You're wrong."
"Am I?" The Doppelganger stepped closer. "You failed at everything you ever tried. You couldn't keep a job. You couldn't keep friends.
You couldn't even keep yourself alive. What makes you think you can survive this?"
Ren felt the words like a knife in her chest. They were her own thoughts, her own doubts, given voice and form.
But she remembered the pattern. She remembered the weakness.
"You're not me," Ren said again. "You're just a bad memory. And I'm done carrying you around."
She swung her shield.
The Doppelganger shattered into a thousand glittering shards that rained down on the forest floor. And as they fell, Ren saw—for just a moment—her own face in each fragment. But it wasn't hollow anymore.
It was tired. Scarred. But alive.
[Skill Acquired: Reflection Break]
"You have shattered the mirror of self-doubt. Gain resistance to psychological attacks from Doppelgangers."
Ren stood in the center of the mirror forest, breathing hard. She had faced her worst self. And she had won.
