Oliver's Jealousy
By: Star Shimmer
Duck missed Delphine and thought about her after his trip from the Mainland. He wanted to see her again. But when Delphine gets rebuilt after the accident when a boulder crushed her, she goes to the island of Sodor for a visit with her best friend. Oliver and Delphine meet each other and Oliver gets jealous of her.
Prologue
At the Mainland Works there was hustling and bustling and a lot of work to be done. The new engine after being crushed by a boulder was going to be rebuilt and back in service on the Mainland rails! She was painted with new paint of pink instead of the usual Great Western colors of green and yellow. The purpose of the paintwork was supposed to match the cheerfulness and kindness of her personality. But better than being back in service was to meet her friends again. But there was one friend she missed a lot. Duck. She met him on a ship to the Mainland. He was suddenly gone when she woke up one morning. She went all around looking for him, asking every engine if they've seen him. But they said they didn't. She went into a cave and a boulder crushed her. This was a memory she suppressed. A memory she tried to bury in her subconscious but it still remains in her mind. But she's back in service once more. After her repair at the Works, she shunted cars in line at the docks. "If only I could meet Duck again someday," she said to herself. Suddenly she overheard a conversation talking with the crane. "Now the next ship to Sodor will come later this afternoon, and I want you to load it so the goods can make it to their guaranteed destination," a workman said to the crane. Sodor! That's where Duck was from. That's when Delphine had an idea! That someday is today! She thought. She felt excitement in her boiler. She was ready to go. Soon the goods ship to Sodor came. Delphine hid inside of a wooden crate so she'd blend in with the goods. She felt herself being lifted into the air and unto the ship. The ship honked and the ship sailed away to Sodor.
Chapter 1
It was a bright and sunny day on the island of Sodor. Duck was pulling goods to the scrap yard. He went to the scrap yard, and a memory soon shot him. He was thinking of Delphine. He didn't know how long he'd been thinking about her. He should've gotten over it by now. But he didn't. Imagine you lost a friend you loved and you couldn't help but think about them? That's how he felt. He just wished he could see her again. He sighed a big sigh of sorrow. Soon a claw swung towards him. It was about to hit Duck! Soon someone behind bashed into him with a loud bang! And shunted him out of the claw's blow as fast as lighting. Duck looked behind him and saw his friend Oliver behind him. Oliver huffed out of breath. "Duck!" Oliver said, panting. "Are you, okay?" he said once he was finally able to catch his breath. Duck smiled warmingly. "Oliver, you saved me, thank you I don't know what I'd do without you," he said. Oliver blushed and smiled when he said this. Soon Reg came in. "Sorry, Duck I could've hit you with my claw," Reg the scrap crane said. Duck smiled as if nothing happened. "It's alright no harm done," he said. Reg smiled.
Duck sure had a way of finding the best in other engines. No matter the circumstance. Duck whistled cheerfully as he chuffed away. "Bye, Oliver, bye Reg!" Duck said. "Bye, Duck!" Oliver and Reg said at the same time. Duck was done with his day's work. He looked over the seaside over the Vicarstown Bridge. The sun reflected its shining glow on the calm, blue water. Seagulls chirped as they passed by. Duck sighed with relief. He loved the sea. Always has, always will. It was a pretty sight to see. Soon a ship honked its horn loudly. It scared Duck. He was not expecting a ship coming. It seemed to be heading for the docks. He was curious to see where the ship would be docked. He went to the docks.
Chapter 2
Duck raced like the wind to the docks before the ship arrived. He looked to see a giant crate that Cranky was lifting. He gently put the crate down onto the rails. Soon Duck also heard a voice muffled under the crate. "Hello, it's dark in here!" she said once the crate landed on the rails. The voice sounded familiar, someone like-The crate was lifted from an engine that looked like she was a Saint class. But something familiar struck Duck. Her facial features, and her cheerful smile. "No, it can't be...." He looked at her with his mouth wide open in shock. Tears came pouring down his face and dropped onto his smokebox. Then he smiled with tears. It was really her! He went to her and wrapped his wheels around his best friend. "Delphine! It's you! I don't believe it!" he said. Delphine smiled and laughed cheerfully. "I'm happy to see you too!" She wrapped her wheels around him too. Duck couldn't believe it, she was back to life after her accident with the boulder crushing her! Tears still poured as the two shared a reuniting embrace. Oliver came to the docks and whistled, He soon found Duck hugging another engine.
Oliver whistled again to get Duck's attention. Soon the two broke the embrace. Oliver looked confused.
two broke the embrace. Oliver looked confused. "What's the hugging all about?" he asked. He looked to Delphine. "Who's that?" he asked him. Duck wiped away tears. "This is my best friend Delphine, I met her when I was on my trip to the Mainland," Duck exclaimed. "Oh," said Oliver. Delphine smiled big. "Hello, I'm Delphine! Nice to meet you!" She said, "Oh, um I'm Oliver," Oliver replied. "You and I are best friends now Oliver!" Delphine said. Oliver looked confused again. He just met her and she's saying that they're best friends? This is confusing Oliver's funnel. He pretended to smile. "Of course we are, whoever is friends with Duck is friends with me," he said sarcastically. Suddenly Oliver felt a sickening feeling in his boiler. He didn't like the idea of being friends with an engine he doesn't even know. And he doesn't like the idea of her being with Duck! Oliver felt a pang of jealousy as the two chuffed away and laughed. Oliver glared at Delphine. He does not like her. He chuffed away angrily.
Chapter 3
When Oliver was huffing down his branchline, he couldn't help but have a bad feeling about Delphine. It wasn't her cheerful personality that was bothering him, it's not her pink paintwork but it's the fact she's with-Oliver stopped on his brakes when he heard laughing. "And remember when we played the shunting game?" Delphine asked. Duck laughed. "I do remember!" Duck replied. Oliver chuffed quietly around the bend and looked to see what they were talking about. Oliver gave Delphine an icy glare. Soon Toad, who almost blew his cover, spoke. "Mr. Oliver, what's going on?" he asked. Oliver snapped his attention back to Toad. He glared at him. "You're going to blow my cover!" Oliver hissed, gritting his teeth. "So, shut your buffers up," he snapped in a whisper. Toad shut up. Duck looked at the place Oliver was in. Duck looked suspicious. Oliver hid away quickly. He looked behind the bend and saw that Oliver was completely gone! He was growing suspicious. Delphine's whistle sounded. Duck was startled. "Ah!" he screamed. "Duck! I was trying to talk to you but you zoned out," She complained. "Sorry, Delphine but I had a feeling someone was watching us from behind that bend over there," he pointed to the bend Oliver had been spying on them. Delphine giggled. "Oh, Duck, there's nothing to worry about, nothing can ruin our whole day together," she said. "Maybe I must have been hallucinating," he said cheerfully. But despite his happiness of spending time with Delphine, his suspicions were increasing. He wondered if Oliver was spying on them.
Chapter 4
Oliver was pulling troublesome trucks the next morning, he told them sharply for them to be on their best behavior. Oliver started up the hill but then the load started getting heavier. The more he pulled up the hill, the heavier the load became. Soon Delphine noticed Oliver being in trouble. She touched buffers with the troublesome truck at the back of the train and she pushed up with all her might and Oliver pulled and when they made it to the top of the hill, Delphine bumped into his back buffers with a little ting! Oliver's wheels started to turn forward slowly and then he went fast down the other side of the hill as fast as lighting. Oliver screamed. "Whoa!" he screamed as if his breaks failed. He almost bash into the buffers. The troublesome trucks pushed him faster and faster. "On, on, faster faster!" They laughed. The more the trucks pulled the more horrified he got. He thought he was going to crash! He quickly put on his breaks and he slowly came to a stop but soon turned a bend and came off of the rails. He huffed out of breath. He looked to Delphine hissed steam at her. She paid no mind when Duck came along. He gasped at the horrible mess. "Delphine! What happened?" Duck asked. Oliver was shocked. He never paid attention to him! "My trucks!" he said. Oliver's eye twitched in anger. He was mostly angry with Delphine. Oliver cleared his throat in annoyance. Duck looked at Oliver and gasped. "Oh, Oliver, I'm sorry I didn't see you there!" Duck said. "Well duh," Delphine said. "He's right there," she said cheerfully. Oliver only stood there. He snickered and said in clenched teeth. "Thanks for the reminder, Delphine," he said. Delphine smiled. "You're welcome, Oliver, that's what friends are for," she said cheerfully. Oliver just rolled his eyes. "Stay here Oliver I'll go get a breakdown train," Delphine said. "But that's all I can do," he yelled to Delphine. He looked at Duck and noticed he was glaring at him. "What?" Oliver asked. "I can't come back on the rails all by myself," he said. Duck let out an annoyed sigh. "That's not what I'm worried about, you don't like Delphine don't you?" he asked. Oliver's boiler went cold. "Come on, Oliver I saw you behind that bend and you watched us, I noticed that pang of jealousy when Delphine arrived and I noticed you haven't been treating her right, usually you're not like this, what's gotten into you?" he asked. Oliver looked away, he didn't know how to reply. He only blushed in embarrassment. "And lastly you crashed my trucks," he said angrily. Oliver didn't say anything. He only looked sad and felt foolish. He hadn't worried about Duck's feelings. Only Delphine's. Duck sighed and chuffed away. Soon Delphine came along with the train. "About time you came back," Oliver said angrily. Delphine looked to Oliver "I'm sorry I bumped into you Oliver, I just wanted to help you," she said. "Help me by what? Setting me up so I could get reprimanded by Duck?" he yelled. Delphine gasped at Oliver's attitude. "You set me up, well two can play at that game!" he said. Get ready Delphine, I had enough. Oliver thought.
Chapter 5 to 6
Delphine slept like a baby that night so Oliver got the idea of sneaking into her shed tonight. He looked to find her snoring. He chuffed quietly to her, he took some bolt cutters and removed her brakelocks. Soon one snapped, then another, and another but Delphine never woke up. Good lord, how does that engine sleep at night? Oliver thought. Despite Delphine being too sleepy to hear anything in the present, Oliver still chuffed out of the sheds quietly. He made it out with a smug on his face. He knew it was a horrible thing to do but it was his idea for revenge for her bumping into him yesterday! Usually he would never be foolish enough to snap off an engine's brakelocks but he did it...to satisfy his jealousy. He made it back to the sheds and fell asleep. The next morning Delphine was going out of control. She was going too fast and she whistled helplessly. Her driver put on her reverser but it didn't work, her wheels were turning but slipping on the tracks. "Help! I can't stop! I can't stop!" she screamed. Oliver watched in amusement. Duck jumped into action to stop her from crashing. He touched buffers with his best friend in front of her but his wheels slipped on the tracks too. He tried with all his might to stop her but he couldn't the uncontrollable force of Delphine's speed was so strong that Duck couldn't stop her. Suddenly they both screamed as they crashed into Tidmouth Sheds. Oliver saw everything with his own eyes and now felt a pang of guilt. He was meant to crash Delphine but now his plan backfired by also crashing Duck as well. If he never cut off Delphine's brakelocks this wouldn't have happened. Now Oliver feels like a fool. He's been jealous of her since the last couple of days she arrived and now...he feels more guilty than ever. He grabbed the cranes Judy and Jerum and lifted them out of the damage and was taken to the works to be repaired. One engine took Delphine while Oliver took Duck. If Duck knew that Oliver had been to Delphine's shed last night and cut off her brakelocks, then he knows for sure he would not be happy about it. Duck cleared his throat. "Ahem," Duck said. Oliver was startled by Duck. He looked behind the flatbed. "Oliver, take us to a siding, I need to talk with you in private. Oliver didn't argue he took the switched track to a nearby siding. "Well, I'm guessing you're proud of yourself?" Duck asked. Oliver looked confused. "About what?" he asked. Duck let out an annoyed sigh. "Don't lie to me, Oliver, you know exactly what you've done," he said. Oliver gulped and his boiler ran cold. He was not going to like this. He pretended to smile and his eyes darted from side to side as he was sweating. "Gee! Is it just me or is it hotter than usual today?" he said. Duck was growing pissed. "Do not change the subject Oliver! Don't think I don't know you broke Delphine's brakelocks last night!" he said. Now Oliver was terrified. He knew! He didn't say anything so he changed the subject. "Sunny day is it?" he asked. Duck snapped. "Stop changing the subject Oliver, You took bolt cutters and cut off her brakelocks!" he said. "I don't know what upsets me more the fact that you deliberately tried to set up Delphine or that you thought this horrible attempt would work! You let your jealousy get the better of you Oliver, I can't say I love you this way anymore," he said. Oliver was stunned. Tears threatened to fall onto his smokebox. He tried to fight back tears. Oliver looked at Duck. He switched to the other tracks and left his friend behind with tears. He bolted out of the siding and didn't pay attention to where he was going. He soon bashed into some buffers. He didn't care. He wouldn't even try to. He let out a sigh of guilt and let guilt and sorrow wash all over him. He decided to go over the Vicarstown Bridge and went to the Mainland. He decided to be really useful elsewhere.
Chapter 7 to 8
Oliver was in the Mainland overnight. He was still so guilty of breaking Delphine's brakelocks. He was....even guilty for being jealous of her. And now he feels like a big fool. He wishes he could get turned back into scrap again. He may miss the others on Sodor, he doesn't want to go home. Atleast, not at the moment. Soon a tall and slender man in a black suit with a short top hat went up to Oliver, he was confused. "Hello young lad," the man said. "What's your name?" he asked. Oliver looked down at the man solemnly. He was too sad right now to even talk to unfamiliar people. Even though he used to work on the Mainland! Soon Oliver finally spoke. "I'm Oliver sir," he said. The man nodded. "I'm the new railway controller Patrick Douglas or just call me, Mr. Douglas if that helps," he said. Oliver nodded. "Alright," he said. Soon the man frowned. "You seem sad my friend, are you feeling alright?" he asked. Oliver didn't reply. "Do you care to talk about it?" he asked. Oliver looked at the man again. The man had trust in his eyes.
Oliver looked down at the rails in guilt. "I did something bad," he said. Patrick's eyes widened in wonder. "What did you do?" he said. "One night I snuck into an engine's shed, and I removed her brakelocks with boltcutters, one of my friends who tried to stop her crashed along with her too," he said. The man nodded. "What was the engine's name?" he asked. "Delphine," Oliver replied. The man soon looked shocked. "Delphine, you mean, the engine that had a boulder crush her?" he asked. Oliver nodded. "I don't know anything about the boulder crushing her, but I do know she was friends with one of my best friends, and I got jealous of her, so that's why I removed her brake locks and crashed her," Oliver said. The man nodded. "She snuck into a goods ship from the Mainland and came to Sodor," he said. "Sodor is where I'm from," he said. "I like you, young Oliver," he said. Oliver managed a smile. He liked Mr. Douglas already. He seemed like a guy to trust. "Thank you Mr. Douglas," he said. Soon a lot of engines Oliver didn't know surrounded them at the docs. Mr. Douglas made his voice louder so all the engines could hear him. "Attention my engines!" he called. "This is Oliver, he's traveled far and wide from the island of Sodor and traveled here!" he said. "He will be a new improvement to the railway!" he said. All the engines looked at Oliver in awe. Oliver felt an indescribable comfort with these unfamiliar faces around him. He then...began to enjoy himself. He smiled more letting all the praise and eyes be on him. Soon he forgot all about the time he removed Delphine's brakelocks. Even if he still remembered. Now would have not been the time to dwell on that now. Today was all about him. He felt important. Like an image of the railway. He blushed pink and smiled.
Chapter 9
Back on Sodor, Duck was repaired at the Steamworks. And Delphine, who was being repaired next to him, smiled as she was being repaired. She didn't mind the removal of a few broken bolts, or loose buffers here and there. But Duck on the other hand was not happy. He sighed. He thought about the time he lectured Oliver and was left behind on a siding. Luckily Edward managed to come and take him to the Steamworks. Delphine noticed his sadness. She frowned. "Is everything alright, Duck?" she asked him. Duck sighed solemnly. "No, I just feel like I said horrible things during mine and Oliver's fight," he said. Delphine felt pity for her best friend. She just wished there was a way to help him. "Oliver has gone somewhere, but I don't know where," he explained. Delphine smiled, understanding. "Even though Oliver was rude to me from the last couple of days I've been here, but I like him," she said. "You do?" Duck asked, confused. "Yeah, even though he was not very nice to me the first couple of times I met him, something inside me just knew that there was some kindness in him," she said. Duck never thought of that. He knew he was kind. But he was a jerk to Delphine. But Duck felt like he was a jerk to him. Then an idea popped into his funnel. He knew what he had to do. He went over the Vicarstown Bridge to the Mainland. He was going to bring Oliver back.
Chapter 10 to 11
Oliver meanwhile back in the Mainland, was happy to feel important. He kept smiling the whole day. He whistled to every engine he met. And all of them knew his name! The trucks were a lot different than the ones he pulled back on Sodor. Then the thought of pulling troublesome trucks on Sodor made him...miss it. His smile slowly turned into a frown. He started feeling guilty again. He...wants to go back to Sodor. He wants to go home! The Mainland was not his home like it used to be. Sodor is his real home! Tears fell onto his smokebox. He doesn't want to be important anymore! "I've had it with being important," he said to himself. "I just wish I could get scrapped," "Yeah I totally get what you'se mean sometimes I wish I could stop being famous too," said a New York voice. Oliver turned around to see who was speaking. She revealed herself and she was a huge engine! Oliver was shocked by how big she is. "Wow," he said in awe. She had wheels mounted on her boiler, a big head lamp on her funnel, and she looked a lot bigger than Oliver. "Hello, I'm Countess," she said. Oliver was too shocked to speak. He didn't know what to say. "I-I'm O-Oliver," he finally said. "You'se shocked by how big I am? Yeah, I get that a lot," she said. "I'm an experimental engine," she said. Oliver was even more surprised. An experimental engine! He knew he met Merlin the Stealth engine when he arrived on Sodor to visit Thomas but he's never met one as fascinating as her. "I've never seen an experimental engine like you before," he said. "Yeah, us experimental engines are not a thing you'se see every day," she said. Now Oliver smiled again. "I never wanted to be popular so I hid out here, in the bushes," she said. "Well I thought it felt good to be important but now, all I want to do is just go home," Oliver said. Countess nodded, understanding. "I never seen an engine like you before either," she said. Oliver liked her already. She looked like someone he could trust to be his brand new best friend.
Chapter 12
Duck made it to the Mainland. The place was full of hustle and bustle. He looked around looking for Oliver. He kept his eyes peeled. He searched in a goods yard when he heard two voices laughing. He hid behind a siding. Duck listened carefully. He looked around the bend and saw that Oliver was hanging out with a different engine a lot bigger than he is. Duck soon felt a pang of jealousy as well. He soon realized what he was thinking. Bother, I'm starting to get jealous like Oliver. He looked at the big engine carefully. He stared at her up and down. Countess looked to see who was staring at her. Duck backed up into the siding more to stay out of view. "I'll be right back," Countess said to Oliver. She chuffed toward the siding. "Hey Oliver, there's a pannier engine here," she said. "Pannier engine?" Oliver asked, confused. He looked behind the siding to see what she was talking about. Oliver could not believe his eyes. It was Duck! "Duck?" Oliver asked, shocked. Duck smiled nervously. "Surprise, Oliver," he said. Oliver smiled warmly to Countess. "Can I converse with him in private?" he asked. Countess chuffed away to leave the two engines alone. "Duck, what are you doing here?" he asked sharply. Duck mustered all the words he had to say. "Oliver, after you crashed into me and Delphine I yelled at you and didn't become any more sensitive, and for that I'm sorry," he said. Oliver sighed. "Why are you sorry?" he asked. Duck was willing to say more but Oliver cut him off. "I was the one who got jealous in the first place so I did the most over-the-top and down right ridiculous things not only to Delphine but to you," he said. Duck nodded. "I came all this way to find you, and I will do whatever it takes so you could come back to Sodor," he said. "Well...I kinda don't want to go back," he said. Duck was confused. "Really?" he asked. "Yeah, I'm important here Duck and I met a new friend, we haven't known each other very long so I want a good chance to get to know her better," he said. Then an idea popped into his funnel. "In fact I want you to meet her too!" he said cheerfully. "You do?" he asked. "Yeah," he said. "Follow me!" he said. Duck followed Oliver to meet Oliver's new friend. "She's really big so it shouldn't be hard to spot her," Oliver said. Duck soon saw a big engine with wheels mounted on her boiler. She also had a big headlamp on her funnel. Duck recognized her! She was that big engine who found Duck at the back of the siding when he was spying on them. "Come on Duck, keep going! Keep going!" Oliver chanted cheerfully. He led her to Countess. Oliver whistled to his friend to get her attention. She looked down and saw Oliver. "Oliver! I didn't know you were here kido," she said. "I brought someone you should meet!" Oliver said. Duck looked up at her. "Hey, I know you! You're that tiny pannier engine who spied on us," she said. Duck's face suddenly went red from embarrassment. "Yeah...well nice to meet you I'm Duck," he said. "Duck? That's a nice name for a handsome engine like yourself, I'm Countess," Countess replied. Duck blushed redder. "Oh, well thank you," he said. Oliver smiled, sensing the new friendship between the two. He then thought of something. He thought of the time he crashed Delphine. He felt like for once, he could be kind to her. After all, for once the only engine who was misbehaving and being a jerk was him! He knew what he had to do to make up for it.
Chapter 13
After traveling back to Sodor, Oliver was now home. (Even though he said he didn't want to go back, he changed his mind to make amends between him and Delphine). He was so pleased to be home, he was happy. He looked around for Delphine. He soon found her at the scrap yard with trucks coupled up to her tender full of scrap. "Oh, there she is!" Oliver said to no one in particular. He whistled to get her attention. "Delphine!" he said. Delphine smiled at Oliver. "Hello Oliver!" she said. "Delphine, I just want to apologize for crashing you the other day," he said. "Oh," Delphine said. "Well I'm sorry for making you feel jealous," she said. "No, you shouldn't be sorry, I was the one who crashed you and Duck when I removed your brakelocks," he said. Delphine smiled. "But there are some things I can't do that you can," she said. Oliver was confused. "Really? Like what?" he asked. "You're kind to those around you, even this brakevan named Toad told me a lot about you," she said. "Oh, Toad, right he has a way of talking," he said. "Mr. Oliver!" Toad said at the back of Delphine's scrap train. "Hi Toad!" Oliver said back. Delphine went on. "So, I guess I was jealous of you as you were to me!" she said. Oliver smiled. He could never agree more. "I think it's time we started over now," he said. Delphine agreed. "Wanna be friends?" Oliver asked. Delphine smiled. "Of course I'll be friends with you!" she said. And so the two were becoming best friends.
