Slide 1: Title
Good morning, everyone.
My name is Munkhchimeg, and today I will present my research proposal titled, “A Systematic Review of the Literature on Immigrant Entrepreneurship: An Integrative Model of Antecedents, Outcomes, Moderators and Mediators, and an Agenda for Future Research.”
In this presentation, I will explain the background, research problem, research gap, proposed A.O.M.M framework and systematic review methodology.
Slide 2: Background and research context
International migration continues to influence labour markets, communities and business activity across host countries.
According to the O.E.C.D, approximately 10 million migrant entrepreneurs operated across O.E.C.D countries in 2022. They represented around 17 per cent of self-employed people.
Immigrant entrepreneurs contribute to host economies through employment, business development and innovation. However, their entrepreneurial experiences are affected by more than their individual abilities. Migration policies, institutions, social relationships and access to resources can also influence their businesses.
Australia is an important context for this topic because approximately 32 per cent of its population was born overseas in 2025. This makes immigrant entrepreneurship relevant both internationally and within Australia.
Slide 3: Research problem
Although research on immigrant entrepreneurship has increased, the existing evidence remains fragmented.
For example, some studies focus on human capital and motivation, while others focus on finance, social networks, government institutions or discrimination. Researchers also examine different outcomes, such as business creation, performance, growth, survival and wellbeing.
These studies use different theories, definitions and measurements. As a result, it is difficult to clearly understand which factors lead to particular outcomes and under what conditions these relationships become stronger or weaker.
This fragmentation also makes it difficult to compare findings across countries and immigrant populations.
Slide 4: Research gap
This study identifies five connected gaps.
First, previous reviews have not fully brought antecedents, outcomes, mediators and moderators together within one organising framework.
Second, theoretical perspectives such as social capital, institutional theory and the resource-based view often remain separate.
Third, mediators and moderators have received less attention than direct relationships. Therefore, we know more about which factors are related to outcomes than how or under what conditions these relationships occur.
There are also measurement differences. For example, studies define success and performance in different ways.
Finally, the geographical concentration of existing research makes it difficult to determine whether the findings apply across different national and institutional settings.
Slide 5: Previous reviews
Previous systematic reviews provide an important foundation for this study.
Polychronopoulos and Nguyen-Duc examined migrant entrepreneurship support in Europe. Chen and colleagues reviewed transnational diaspora entrepreneurship. Fubah and Barnard focused on migrant entrepreneurship in Africa.
Other reviews examined minority-language contexts, success factors among African immigrant entrepreneurs and the role of networks.
These reviews make valuable contributions, but they usually focus on one region, one group or one dimension of immigrant entrepreneurship. They do not fully connect antecedents and outcomes while also examining mediating mechanisms and moderating conditions.
My review will build on this previous work by using an integrated A.O.M.M framework.
Slide 6: Research aim and objectives
The aim of this study is to systematically review and synthesise the literature on the antecedents, outcomes, moderators and mediators of immigrant entrepreneurship and develop an agenda for future research.
The first objective is to identify individual, social, financial and institutional antecedents.
The second is to identify the outcomes examined in previous studies.
The third is to identify mediators and moderators that researchers have empirically examined or conceptually proposed.
The final objective is to use these findings to develop an evidence-based agenda for future research.
Slide 7: Research questions
Five research questions guide this study.
The first question examines antecedents, while the second examines outcomes and how researchers have measured them.
The third focuses on mediating mechanisms that may explain how antecedents influence outcomes.
The fourth examines moderating factors that may change the strength or direction of these relationships.
The fifth identifies theoretical, methodological and contextual gaps and uses them to develop a future research agenda.
Together, these questions directly support the study aim and objectives.
Slide 8: Conceptual logic of A.O.M.M
This slide presents the proposed conceptual structure.
Antecedents are factors that come before or influence immigrant entrepreneurship. These may include education, experience, motivation, networks, financial resources and institutional conditions.
Outcomes are the consequences examined in the literature. Examples include business creation, survival, growth, innovation, internationalisation and wellbeing.
Mediators explain how or why an antecedent influences an outcome. For example, discrimination and acculturation may influence business performance through social or psychological capital.
Moderators explain when, where or for whom a relationship becomes stronger or weaker. Possible examples include the institutional environment, location, industry, language and age.
Not every article will examine all four categories. I will use A.O.M.M as an organising framework and distinguish between variables that studies formally tested and those they only proposed conceptually.
Slide 9: Research design
This study uses a systematic literature review based on secondary academic evidence.
A systematic review is suitable because immigrant entrepreneurship research covers different theories, countries, populations and methodological approaches.
The review will follow the prisma 2020 guidelines. prisma will support transparent reporting of study identification, screening, eligibility assessment and inclusion.
The proposed review period is from 2000 to 2026. After selecting the studies, I will use the A.O.M.M framework to classify and synthesise their findings.
Therefore, prisma will guide the selection and reporting process, while A.O.M.M will guide the analysis.
Slide 10: Search strategy and eligibility
The preliminary search used terms such as “immigrant entrepreneur,” “migrant entrepreneur” and “refugee entrepreneur.”
These terms were combined with A.O.M.M-related words, including antecedent, determinant, outcome, performance, success, mediator and moderator.
The review will include peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2000 and 2026. Studies must focus substantially on international immigrant, refugee, foreign-born or transnational entrepreneurship and address at least one part of the A.O.M.M framework.
Studies will be excluded if they fall outside the selected period, treat entrepreneurship only as a peripheral issue or do not meet the publication requirements. Duplicate records, books and book chapters will also be excluded.
Slide 11: prisma flow
This slide presents the preliminary prisma process.
The initial search identified 172 records across the selected sources. After removing nine duplicates and one record outside the publication period, 162 records remained for screening.
Title, abstract and metadata screening excluded 98 records. Sixty-four studies then moved to detailed eligibility assessment, where two more studies were excluded because entrepreneurship was not their primary focus.
This produced a preliminary group of 62 studies for the A.O.M.M synthesis.
These figures represent the proposal-stage search. The final number may change if I conduct additional searches, update the search date or revise the eligibility criteria. I will report any changes transparently in the final prisma diagram.
Slide 12: Data extraction and synthesis
For each included study, I will extract bibliographic details, country and migrant context, theoretical perspective, research design, sample characteristics, key variables and principal findings.
I will then code the evidence according to the four A.O.M.M categories.
A statistical meta-analysis is not proposed because the studies use different research designs, measurements and analytical approaches.
Instead, I will use narrative and thematic synthesis. This approach will help identify common patterns, relationships, contradictory findings and under-researched contexts.
The literature matrix will provide a consistent structure for recording and comparing the studies.
Slide 13: Expected outcomes and contribution
This research is expected to make several contributions.
First, it will develop an integrated A.O.M.M framework that makes the relationships among immigrant entrepreneurship factors clearer.
Second, it will organise antecedents across individual, social, financial and institutional categories and clarify the different outcomes examined in the literature.
Third, it will identify mediating mechanisms and moderating conditions that help explain how and when antecedents influence outcomes.
Finally, it will identify theoretical, methodological and contextual gaps and use them to propose a structured agenda for future research.
Slide 14: Research timeline
The research began with protocol development and preliminary searching in July.
Screening and eligibility assessment followed, with data extraction and coding planned for the next stage.
The thematic synthesis and development of the A.O.M.M framework will take place after coding. The final stages will focus on identifying research gaps, developing the future research agenda and completing the dissertation.
The timeline may be adjusted depending on the final number of included studies and feedback from my supervisors.
Slide 15: Conclusion
To conclude, immigrant entrepreneurship research contains valuable evidence, but the findings remain divided across theories, contexts and variables.
This systematic review will use prisma to select and report the evidence transparently and A.O.M.M to organise the findings.
The expected contribution is a clearer understanding of what influences immigrant entrepreneurship, what outcomes follow, how these relationships occur and under what conditions they change.
Thank you for listening. I welcome your questions and feedback.
